Theme License and Transfer

Last Modified:
2026-09-07

Ursus themes are sold through the Shopify Theme Store, so theme licensing is handled by Shopify. Shopify is the authoritative source on how licences work, and we point to their documentation throughout this page.

We don't add licensing rules of our own on top of Shopify's.

What's on this page

  • What your licence covers
  • Using a theme on more than one store
  • How theme transfers work
  • Who handles what
  • Customized themes
  • If you're not sure your copy is licensed

What your licence covers

When you buy an Ursus theme from the Shopify Theme Store, Shopify licenses that theme to the store where the purchase was made. A theme licence can only be active on one store at a time.

Your licence includes:

  • Free updates to that theme, including major versions
  • Support as described in our Support Policy

Each Ursus theme is licensed separately. Buying one Ursus theme doesn't give you access to our other themes.

Using a theme on more than one store

Each store needs its own licence.

If you run several Shopify stores and want the same theme on more than one, you'll need to purchase it for each store.

How theme transfers work

If you're closing one store and moving to another, you may be eligible to transfer your theme licence.

Shopify runs this process from start to finish. We have no way to transfer, reissue, or verify a licence on your behalf.

What Shopify requires

Shopify sets the conditions for a transfer. At the time of writing, these include:

  • Both stores using the same account owner email
  • You being the registered owner of both stores
  • Permanently closing the original store as part of the transfer

Once the original store is closed, it can't be reopened. It's worth being certain before you start.

What moves, and what doesn't

Only the theme moves. Your products, collections, menus, pages, and blog posts stay with the original store.

Refunds during a transfer

Shopify may refund your original theme purchase as part of the transfer, based on what you paid. That decision is Shopify's, not ours.

How to start a transfer

Contact Shopify through the Shopify Help Center at https://help.shopify.com/. They can also confirm the current requirements, which may have changed since this page was last revised.

Who handles what

Shopify handles

  • Processing your purchase and holding the billing record
  • Issuing and validating your theme licence
  • Refunds for theme purchases
  • Transfers between stores

Ursus handles

  • Theme documentation
  • Theme support for licensed stores
  • Theme updates, including major versions
  • Bug fixes released through new theme versions

Customized themes

If you or a developer have customized your copy of an Ursus theme, your licence works exactly the same way.Customization doesn't change what the licence covers or how a transfer works.

One practical point: updating a theme replaces its files, so custom code doesn't carry across automatically. Our Support Policy explains what that means day to day.

If you're not sure your copy is licensed

Ursus themes are only available through the Shopify Theme Store. Buying through the Theme Store listing is what connects your store to a valid licence, and it's what makes you eligible for theme updates and support.

If you have a question about your licence, Shopify can check it for you through the Shopify Help Center at https://help.shopify.com/. We can't see purchase records.

Changes to this page

Shopify may change how theme licensing and transfers work. Where that happens, Shopify's own documentation is the current and authoritative source, and we'll update this page to match.

The "Last modified" date at the top shows when it was most recently revised.
